How was Gamma Phi Sigma "Hermanos Unidos" Fraternity, Inc., established?
On April 16, 1992, eight Latino males united to create a fraternity which would devote itself to promote excellence in academics, exemplify community service, enhance cultural awareness, and above all, encourage brotherhood on college campuses across the United States.
Their goals were simple yet ambitious; create a Latino-based fraternity which would promote responsibility among its membership to lead the growing Latino community in the United States by sharing the Latino culture through community service- and academic-oriented events as well as pride in its cultural diversity.
Its first members were composed of numerous ethnic backgrounds stretching from North America to tip of South America with roots stretching as far as European and the African Diasporas. Our first brothers began to build a positive image for Latino males to counter the negative stereotypes in society. They spent years organizing and establishing the organization that would later become Gamma Phi Sigma, “Hermanos Unidos” Fraternity, Incorporated; one of the premiere Community Service fraternities in the latino greek society.
